Minutes – May 31st, 2016

Called to Order: 6:33 by Vice President Elisia Burroughs

Financial Report – Nina Mighaccio

  • Month of May – mostly outgoing funds (bills)
  • June will make money with the carnival
  • Should be ahead of last year

Principal’s Report:

  • Special Education classes coming
  • Introduced 4 new teachers
  • Power Point presentation – will show students
  • Any questions?
  • Core Survey Results are coming in
  • Wrapping up testing

Chair positions are still open if anyone wants to volunteer

Special Education request:

  • Special Ed. Teacher asked for funds for subscription to “News To You” a tool that all of the teachers use and they share the subscription - $159 or $169
  • Melissa Whitecotton – motion to pay for the subscription
  • Joanne Jones – 2nd the motion
  • All if favor – motion passed

Documentary Film Nights:

  • Has become a PTA sponsored event
  • Mrs. Cyers will still host

5th Grade Committee: Julie Texeira & Rocio Sandoval

  • T-shirts are ready
  • Flyers went home
  • Have everything they need
  • Need some more volunteers
  • Asked for donations

8th Grade Promotion: Joanne Jones

  • Had meeting
  • Invitations and tickets gone out
  • Cal State Long Beach – take over the student union
  • Free dress
  • 8th grade awards coming up
  • Middle school awards too
  • Promotion practice coming up
  • Day of Promotion – no tickets will be issued for street sweeping
  • Ceremony 8:30 – recess
  • There won’t be any middle school bells to interrupt
  • Parking lot will be open – someone suggested that it be open for handicap parking only
  • Kinder graduation – 10:30 a.m.
  • Banker is selling class of 2016 t-shirts


  • Can use more volunteers
  • Wristbands presale: $20, Wristbands day of carnival: $25 – on sale before and after school
  • Tickets: 2 for $1


  • Lisa sends  her thanks to everyone
  • There is a thank you card & get well card going around

Question about parking:

  • Late bird kinder pick up – ticketing has been happening to the cars parking in the loading only zone out front
  • Many suggestions given on where else to park.

Yearbook Update:

  • 110 sold -- $400 in the black
  • Will be distributed next week
  • $25 if didn’t preorder

Questions about next year’s activities – Jill Ochoa:

  • Will there be a Holiday Marketplace?
  • What events will happen and which ones won’t?
  • Winter Wonderland may not happen
  • Next year’s activities will be decided over the summer and will be with PTA consent, not a president’s only decision

September 30, 2014

Lisa Hogg called the meeting to order at 6:30 pm.

Wendy Sowinski, Principal Report

  • There will be automated phone calls regarding minimum days for Thursday, Oct. 2nd, and Friday, Oct. 3rd.  All students, K-8, get out at 1:00 pm because of the expected high heat.
  • Elementary Report Cards will be replaced with Achievement Reports


Lisa Mitchell – Secretary (2013-14 school year)

  • Minutes from last meeting, 05/27/2014, were posted on PTSA website and posted in hall near PTSA mailbox. There were no corrections or changes so they stand as posted.


Financial Reports

  • Budget – Joann Jones made a motion to approve the Budget, it was seconded by Janice Leibl.  All present voted in favor of approving the budget as presented.
  • Nina Michaccio – PTSA will be using a new user-friendly accounting program, PTAEZ, in order to make it easier to track and monitor expenses.
  • PTSA budget is low, expenses are being cut. 
  • The Audit passed.

Lisa Hogg – President’s Report

  • New PTSA Room - Room 24 is now the PTSA Room.  Please check and make sure that both doors are locked before you leave.  Contact Lisa Hogg to reserve the room.
  • Snack Sales - Thursday afterschool Snack Sales are being discontinued due to the State’s strict new health guidelines for sales of snacks.  We’re looking for other fundraising ideas to replace it.
  • School Cents – Turn in your receipts to PTSA to log them.  Prizes are given as gift receipt/certificate (not cash) for Mall businesses, such as Target, where we can purchase supplies.  We made $540 last school year.  We donated about 153 pounds of food to the Food Drive.
  • Fall Pictures & Free Dress – Friday, Oct. 3rd, is Picture Day and is also a Free Dress day 
  • Chili Cook-Off is coming – Contact Lisa Hogg to participate
  • Chair Positions – all positions are now filled
  • Weekly Emails – to get items on the weekly email blasts, send email no later than the Saturday prior, to


Committee Chairpersons Reports

  • Tia Wideman & Karen Mack, PTSA Membership Drive – 438 Members signed up so far, very close, maybe even over the budgeted goal.  There has been great Teacher participation in the membership drive.
  • Lisa Hogg, Spring Pictures – received an extra $1668
  • Joann Jones, Fall Blood Drive – Tuesday, Oct. 7th.  Signup at Red Cross.  Sponsor code is newcomb
  • Joann Jones, Parliamentarian – She recommends Lisa Hogg, Jill Ochoa, and Diane Green to be in the Bylaws Committee.
  • Lisa Hogg, E-Waste Drive – Saturday, Oct. 11th, 9am – 2pm, at Newcomb south parking lot
  • Nina Mighaccio, Gift Wrap Fundraiser – New company called “Kids First”, they’re giving back 45-55%, goal is $12,000
  • Barbara Newendorp, Fall Social – Saturday, Oct. 18th. Volunteers and candy donations are needed.  Everything in the event is free, except for the food and the professional photo booth.  The school is selling food instead of having food trucks this year.  
  • Red Ribbon Week – Coming the week of October 27 thru October 31, more info to come
  • Barbara Parham, Family Bowling Night - Tuesday, Nov. 4th from 6pm - 8pm at Cerritos Lanes in Cerritos.
  • Tia Wideman, Book Fair – Week of Nov. 17 thru Nov. 21.  Volunteers are needed, more info to come.
  • Jackie Eliopoulos, Spirit Shirts – Over $1200 sold so far.  Shirts will be sold at the Fall Social on Oct. 18.  Reminder – light blue polo shirts has to be from Newcomb only, this is due to the variations in shade compared to shirts bought outside of Newcomb.
  • Katrina Godsil, Newcomb Foundation – Casino Night on Oct. 11, tickets available online at:
  • Jill Ochoa, Spirit Nights – Packets with list of scheduled events thru December, 2014, will be in backpack mail and also announced on weekly email updates.  All events for the school year are booked.
  • Jill Ochoa, After School Classes – Class schedules vary and changes every 6 weeks, class registration available online, $50 fee
  • Frank Coleman, Run Like Its Recess 5K – Sunday, November 2, at El Dorado Park.  Registration forms available at the school Office, and also on Run like its recess  Volunteers are also needed.  
  • Chris Newendorp, Reflections - This year’s theme is "The world would be a better place if..."  Submissions are due Monday, October 27th or earlier.

General Meeting Minutes

May 27, 2014

Jill Ochoa called the meeting to order at 7:02 pm.

Lisa Mitchell led Pledge of Allegiance.

Jill Ochoa introduced the Student presentations for the month.

  • Student Council – They will be hosting a cotton candy booth at the carnival. Cost is $1 or 2 tickets.

They are currently holding elections for next year. 8th grade promotion is approaching also. They will be helping Ms. Sowinski with the 6th grade orientation for new middle school students.

Wendy Sowinski – School Report

  • Common Core will be in full swing for next year.
  • We will be losing a 1st and 3rd grade class next year.
  • Elementary report cards will be back next year.

Jill Ochoa – Introduced and thanked Girl Scout troop 1943 for helping us with babysitting during the meeting all year. They have been working to earn their babysitting badge. PTSA gave them $50 Michael’s gift card to help with the shirts they are making for a trip they will be taking.

Rocio Sandoval – Financial Reports

  • Explained in detail the financial budget report. We have $42,935.60 in overall accounts. Since Diane is out any questions email Jill and she will get back to you with an answer.

Joanne Jones – Corresponding Secretary

  • Thank yous from Newcomb students thanking for field trips. Many thank you’s from teacher and classified staff for the various luncheons. Diane green thanked us too.

Jill Ochoa – President Report

  • Open Board position – We have only 1 open board position and it is Hospitality. Please let Jill know if you or anyone you know would like to chair it.
  • There are surveys on the table, please fill one out and return to Jill tonight or drop in PTSA mailbox outside the office.
  • Student Appreciation Day is June 3rd for Middle School (1:20-2:30) and June 4 for Elementary (11:30-school is out). Shave it will once again be on hand to thank the Newcomb kids for being AWESOME and to a great year!!
  • Chairperson In & Out – Mon. June 9 in Science Lab. Turn in all chairperson books to the office after drop off. If you cannot attend please also leave notes for the next chair.


Melisa Whitecotton – Spirit nights

  • Super Mex we make $250 and Round Table we only made $24.  This Spirit night also helped us earn bonus points for School Cents.

Allison Gonzales – Used Book Sale

  • It went really well. We made about $421.24
  • Donated leftover books to AMVET

Melisa Whitecotton – Open house

  • We made a little under $1000 but are still waiting for Java on the Go to send in donation about $45 dollars.

Lisa Mitchell- Carnival

  • Friday, may 30th 2-7pm.
  • There will be 3 food trucks, java on the Go and Sno Biggie carts.
  • There will be lots of inflatable’s, a kid zone, Karaoke, Photo booth, face painting, train,
  • Started selling wristbands today and we already sold 100.
  • Explained that since more events need more help need MS parents to help work booths.
  • Also, a lot of flyers were put in teachers mail but have not gone home. They should come home today or tomorrow.

Julie Texeira – 8th grade Promotion

  • Schedule of events: Friday, June 6th – 8th grade awards

                                  Monday, June 9 – promotion rehearsal in Auditorium then go park at 10 am

Tuesday, June 10 – Middle School awards assembly

Wednesday, June 11 – 8th graders to CSULB 10-12:30

Thursday, June 12 – Promotion at Millikan high school at 12:30pm

  • Still need photographer to take pictures of students when they are promoted.

Jackie Eliopoulos – Mixed bags

  • You can still order online and they will donate back to school all year long we get 40%.
  • Raffle winner for teacher with most sold by class was Mrs. Dina.
  • Still need to do student one by raffle.

Jackie Eliopoulos – Spirit bags

  • Elisia Burroughs will chair next year. Suggested to not do orders and deliver to class. Only cash and carry have pick up in office or room.

Frank Coleman – Run Like its Recess

Katrina Godsil – Foundation

  • June 2 is the golf tournament Old ranch Country club. Raffle tix available for ipad $5 or $5 for $20
  • Online auction is up now!
  • Oct. 11 – casino Night 6-11pm at the Petroleum Club
  • Photo booth, DJ, blackjack craps, includes $100 chip, Italian food and Drink ticket
